The four biggest mistakes you can make while wedding dress shopping

Congratulations on beginning your exciting journey into wedding dress shopping! Over the years, we’ve noticed a couple of red flags that can cause a bride to be stressed and ultimately have a harder time finding their perfect gown. Read on to find our four big mistakes you should avoid while finding your wedding dress!

1. Going to too many stores

When brides go to too many stores, it’s typically because they’re having a hard time committing to a gown. Either nothing feels right or they’re just putting too much pressure on themselves to have a big, dramatic, teary-eyed “yes” moment, when in reality, not everyone has that reaction! If you end up trying on too many dresses, you will often end up confused, overwhelmed and not able to listen to what your heart is telling you. Try not to clutter your mind with a plethora of gowns and we promise you’ll be happier saying yes to your dress earlier in the process than later!

2. Taking pictures in the dresses

We understand your thoughts completely: how will you remember all the gowns you tried on? What if you want to see how a gown photographs? There are tons of reasons brides may want selfies in all the options they try on, but take it from the experts: no iPhone camera can truly capture the way you feel in a gown. Don’t make your decision after over-analyzing pictures of yourself in sample gowns that are ill-fitting and covered in clips — a wedding dress will never fit quite right until professionally tailored! Base your decision on how a gown makes you feel while it’s on your body and we promise you’ll never regret it!

3. Waiting too long

It can be a surprise to brides how long it takes gowns to arrive once we place their order. We recommend you go shopping ideally one year before your wedding date or as soon as you can! There’s no reason to wait to shop, because the world of wedding gowns is so timeless. If you fall in love with a dress today you will absolutely still love it next year. It takes up to six months for couture designers to create a gown, not to mention the alterations appointments, which you don’t want to be rushed! If you’re a bride who has a short engagement or you’ve just waited to begin shopping, don’t worry! We can still work to rush your gown shipment or find a beautiful sample to purchase off our floor, but for the most options you’ll want to come shopping at least 8 months before your big day.

4. Going in close-minded

We get it, you’ve been to countless weddings, know what looks best on your body and have been curating your wedding dress Pinterest board since high school (or maybe you’ve just been scrolling through ours 😉). It’s almost impossible to go into wedding dress shopping without some sort of expectation for what you’re going to love. Here’s the thing, how you look and feel in a wedding gown is completely different from any dress you’ve ever worn. So, if you say you hate strapless dresses because you end up pulling them up all night, have you ever worn a strapless gown with intricate boning that has been tailored by an expert seamstress to fit you? The quality, fit and feeling of a wedding dress is unlike anything else you’ve tried on in your life. So do your best, keep an open mind and be ready to be surprised!
